i’d like to keep it secret, would that look bad if i don;t answer about it?
Why does it even matter how much i was previously making?
I’d like to be judged by a fair market price.

Does the person doing the interview have access to your prior salary?
Normally companies will not discuss salary with other companies. So my advice would be to give an amount you would be comfortable recieving from the new company. Most will offer more than you presently earn.
Think of it this way, if you earned $50k at your present job. The new job pays $45k – $70k, if you give your salary as $50k they can offer $55k and most people will accept. Instead if you meet the qualifications for the position, and your research shows the average salary for the position. Considering your education and experience is $65k. Then you need to think about what number you give as prior salary.
You asked: “…On a job interview, do you have to answer the question about your previous salary.?…”
No, you don’t.
I’ve found that when a prospective employer asks me what I made at my earlier job, it’s easy to just say, “I’m confident that you have budgeted a fair salary for the job we’re discussing today. What had you intended to pay your new hire in this position?” That puts the ball back in their court, and now they are the ones to decide whether to disclose money issues or not.
Good luck.
