I’m hoping the answers to this question will let me see what cool niche hobbies are out there and cool equipment I may have no clue about that I can have fun researching. Thanks! Best answer will be chosen by the hobby/purchase combination I find the most inspiring.

The neat thing about my hobby is that my purchases aren’t planned. I have a lengthy ‘want list’ of high-grade baseball, football, hockey and non-sports cards for my sets. I have holes to fill and the sets I do have that are complete always can use some upgrading. My hobby gives me both a sense of achievement when I fill that last hole in a set or score a key upgrade, and the thrill of the hunt. That thrill is especially great when a card I don’t expect to find suddenly pops up on eBay, and even better when I win it. I can never plan these purchases. This makes budgeting for them a bit difficult and has required some creative financing at times, and also required me to sell some things that I like, in favor of those I like more. It’s a challenge, and part of the fun.

I too have a hobby that is very opened ended and most of the time a coin, medal, paper money or token ends up in my hand unplanned. I am a numismatist, so in the end the history of the items are more important to me, than the value. I am just as happy with a note from world war II printed on a paper bag with berry juice ink, as I am with some of my colonial coins that are worth big bucks. I have just as much fun working on my Chinese cash collection (inexpensive coins) as I do my Morgan silver dollar collection. I am always looking to up grade both. I am only answering this question to inspire you to get a good hobby, for if you check, I really don’t need the points. You would spend several life times researching numismatics.
