Why Do Atheists Think It’s Religion That Causes Many Wars And Not…..?

…the INDIVIDUAL HUMAN BEINGS??
ANYBODY can cause a war. It’s a matter of the human nature of the individuals involved in whatever they are affiliated with. It can be a gang , organization , military factions , etc. Alot of folks may use religion as a medium to oppress others and cause problems but it’s NOT the religion , but it’s the PERSON. So why blame religion???

  1. Beletje_vos AM + VT says:

Religious beliefs were the cause of and/or the justification for the following:
    The Spanish Inquisition
    The Crusades
    The Divine Rights of Kings
Witch Trials in Europe and America
    The perpetuation of Slavery
The Dehumanization of other religion’s believers (and non-believers)
    The Subjugation of Women
The Refusal of some parents to give medical treatment to their children, relying instead on payers and faith-healers
The decades of violence between Jews and Moslems in the Middle East
The decades of violence between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland
Capital Crimes against Women’s Health Centers
The 9-11 tragedy (a true faith-based act) and the subsequent War on Terror
The Suppression of Science, and indeed the suppression of reason itself.
    *edit*
IRev. Albert Einstein, atheism was never used to justify war or violence.

  2. Wesley B says:

Personally, I don’t think religion causes most of the wars, but I DO think that it is the most commonly CITED justification, recruitment tool, and motivation for all those soldiers who fight beneath that individual human being who started it.
I think most wars get started for political reasons, but then the politicians use religion to stir up emotions and get people to sign up and be willing to go fight and die.

  3. FOV says:

I’m an atheists and I realize that religion doesn’t cause all wars.

    History
When a group of people fundamentally believes that a group of people deserve to be tortured for eternity. How can you call them friendly?

  6. Nick Name says:

I blame religion because that is what is motivating these people to do this. I don’t blame a non-living thing for war, it’s not as if Christianity is an entity that goes and fights its neighbour Islam….but a religion without people doesn’t exist and more often than not, they’re fighting over their religious beliefs.

  7. T.K. Baha says:

Sure, anyone can start a war but it doesn’t mean anything if no one agrees. I can start a war on YOU right now; doesn’t mean anyone will follow. Religion is what makes people follow. One person screams “THEY ARE AGAINST GOD” and the religion line up with their guns.

  8. Lincoln6 says:

On 9/11 individual human beings did it for God and God didn’t even bother to intervene.

  9. ☣Hardstyle☣ ☣ Jesus ☣ says:

Because of people like those two idiots that commented first on this question. who should wind up bottom of the page fairly soon with the thumbs down i gave them.
Its really just a mistake of judgment. I know its individuals not religion itself. They do however use religion as an excuse and way of controlling people though.

  10. Voltaire says:

What the protestantReformation and subsequent 30 years war had nothing to do with religion?
What about Ireland and the Protestants and Catholics?
Cyprus and the invasion by Turkish Muslims?

  11. OO says:

Religions are nothing without the individual human beings. It is the justification and motive behind their actions. Therefore, it’s religion. Get it?
    Probably not…

  12. Rachel says:

    I agree 100%.
Wars are often caused by extreme NATIONALISM– too much pride in a group or country– and then religion is used as an excuse for “justification”. It’s sad, really, because various religious figures preach peace and love towards one another.

  13. iPortGir says:

Well, it’s mainly cause religion does cause wars and here are some examples of the kind of people who use religion and it’s followers
Rev. Ted Arthur Haggard – Christian, Bisexual & Crystal Meth user
Sen. Larry Craig – Christian, closet Bisexual Minneapolis airport bathroom
Rev. Gary Aldridge – Christian, Erotic asphyxiation
Jim & Tammy Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart
    Waco Texas – Christians
    Jones Town – Christians
    KKK – Christians
    Nazism – Christians
    Adolph Hitler – Catholic
    Serbians – Christian
    911 – Muslim
This shows that belief is detrimental to rational thought, by R. Rieshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chr…

  14. neil s says:

Many wars have been caused only because the people believed the religious claims.

  15. Steven says:

you have a valid point but i doubt the 9/11 terrorists would have did what they did if they weren’t religious. Also the crusades and the spanish Inquisition. but religion doesn’t cause all wars and atheists don’t all think it does.

  16. foxwitha says:

I agree with everything Beletje_vos AM + VT says but also I would like to add world war 2, hitler didn’t like the jews and wanted to world to live under one religion.

  18. interest says:

When the person cites that they are doing it in the name of or on behalf of their religion, it becomes a religious issue…
Having said that, it is the individual that must be responsible for his or her actions. Sorry to say, it’s rarely the case…
    IMHO

  19. Scooterp says:

I think they’re embarrassed that it was the atheist governments of the 20th century that were the most sadistic and ended in the most human carnage.
    They have to blame someone.
(I always find it funny that the Crusades are the most recent example they can come up with for a religious war. Have there been none since the 12th century?)

  20. IRev. Albert Einstein says:

Hint: They ignore Lenin, Stalin, Mao…and many other atheist murderers who killed millions
