So I’ve been bored to day and decided to just look around the internet for the little niches I have.
When I talk, I talk extremely fast to the point where I have to repeat myself multiple times for people to understand. Sometimes in my speech, I mix up the first letter of the words I’m using (for ex: noman rumeral vs. roman numeral). I also mix them up when I’m typing, but I’m perfectly capable of reading just fine.
Would this be just because I talk way too fast, or is it more on the dyslexic side? It runs on only one side of my family.
Thanks! 🙂
Dyslexia is a matter of reading and writing, not necessarily speaking. Exchanging first letters of words is malapropism – NOT a disabillty, a kind of joke – named after Mrs. Malaprop, a character in Richard Sheridan’s play, The Rivals. Next time you are bored, try reading good book. It gets you into less trouble.
No, you probably don’t have dyslexia.
Yes, dyslexia does often run in families. Yes, people with dyslexia are often more prone to mixing up sounds (even when talking). But everybody does this sometimes. Same with typos.
Do you talk so fast because you get excited about whatever you’re talking about, or do the words just come out fast? If you concentrate, can you control your rate of speech? There are some speech/language disorders that can result in difficulties modulating the rate of speech and coordinating the language and muscles that go into speech. If the talking too fast thing is really interfering with your life in social and school situations, and it feels like you can’t fix it yourself, then it might be worth getting checked out.
But based on what you’ve said, I wouldn’t assume you had any diagnosable disorder. I’d just chalk these up as personal quirks or habits and not worry about them.
Take care!
