Is This A Scam, Or…?

I had this company call my home number claiming to be affiliated with Windows, telling me there was malicious software on my computer. I instantly suspected something fishy, but I played along – cautious as to what info I told them.
They told me to Run the “Event Viewer” program, showing a bunch of errors and warnings. She then told me to go into my computer data to retrieve a 6-digit number from my product ID, and enter it into the Technical Support section on http://www.globetechzone.com/ – allowing one of their workers to have access to my computer. That is where I drew the line. She then told me my systems were out of date, and I needed to pay $115 to update my system. I promptly hung up.
So have any of you heard of globetechzone and is it a scam?

  3. The Yahoo! Police says:

Scam – what they were trying to do is a Remote Access operation, thereby giving them complete access to all your computers files and personal data.

This is a long running scam – I’ve not heard of that company but they are calling using all sorts of names
Microsoft (owner of Windows) has a warning on their website about this scam and says they will never call you http://www.microsoft.com/security/online…
If you get a call like that NEVER go to any site they tell you to go to. They want you to go to a remote access site that gives them access to ALL of your files, emails, passwords, etc that they will use for identity theft purposes. Then they will install malware, spyware, keyloggers, etc on your computer and blackmail you into paying up to $1000 to remove them
If anyone like this calls again, hang up, call your phone company to ask for the number of the last person who called you and report this to the police

Hell yes it is a scam. I received something a phone call of this sort and hung up immediately. It is all fake. Dont trust anyone saying that they are affiliated with Windows. They are just trying to get into your computer to retrieve your information. Dont fall for this kind of stuff. If you would really want to update your computer you should really see a certified local specialist.

  6. Glenn Q says:

SCAM..criminals..this scam has been going around since about 2008
Nobody legit would contact you about your computer !
No stranger who phones you about anything is likely to be useful/honest.

  7. G'hound says:

I wouldn’t let any cold-caller into my computer. It sounds like they wanted to sell you something you didn’t actually need. If it looks like a scam and sounds like a scam… then let’s just say it’s sharp business practice and hanging up was the correct thing to do.
