I want to start a social network. Maybe not as big as Facebook, but a niche social network similar to goodreads.com or something along those lines.
How many coders do I need?
Would they be willing to donate time if the idea had good potential?
How would I find coders? Colleges?
Do I also need a website designer?
How many you need depends on how fast you want it online and working.
As far as donating time, no serious developer will because we expect to be paid for our work regardless of the success or failure of your project.
College students are not skilled enough to do this work.
Yes your developers need to know how to design a web site.
You’re going to have to be willing to shell out a fair amount of money up front to get this going. If you do not then your project is doomed before it ever starts.
Do 9 mothers give birth a baby any faster than one? You need to start with a single developer, an experienced one. Once you have something going and the plan is crystal clear, you’ll be able to get more people into it.
I don’t think anyone would donate time… unless it’s about something extremely innovative and profitable, and they’re long-time friends (why would they otherwise trust you?).
And yeah, at some point you would need a website designer, but if I were you, I would wait until having something, and let the first guy make all the decisions related to the development [so, again: you need someone experienced].
Another option is to contract a software boutique to do all the coding and design.
