It used to be a working fireplace 20 or so years ago but is now blocked and just looks like a wall now. Would we have to find out how important it is regarding the structural integrity of the house? It’s located on an interior wall as opposed to on the outside of the house if that makes a difference..

If the fireplace is a prefabricated metal box it is probably a zero clearance fireplace in which case it is simply that metal box and a large metal pipe for a chimney with framing around it. As long as the fireplace is permanently disabled you could remove some of the venting if it’s in the way. If you frame your niche properly it shouldn’t be an issue with structural integrity.
