I’m 17 years old, 5’10” and 150 lbs. I’m fairly fast, my 40 yard time is 4.6 s and my mile is usually between 4:55 and 5:15. Although I am quite skinny I am pretty strong, nothing crazy but I am strong nonetheless. I used to play slot receiver and punt/kick returner in football but I aim to play rugby now. I am new to the sport and wish to see what niche I could fit on the pitch. Any ideas?
You sound like you would make a good full back or winger. Its important to be fast and comfortable with catching/kicking the ball in these positions , so if that sounds like you , go for it !
Yep stand on the corner be a flag pole.ok.
I would look at you at Winger, stronger the better, then if you develop a nice use of both boots you can add Fullback. Keep in mind your position may be dictated by what your team has for available players so be open to try others like Fly Half if you pass well and can kick.
I coach college rugby, and a starting Flanker of mine last season is now playing Outside Center on the local men’s team you see, so your size, strength and speed are not the only factors on what best helps your side position wise, team makeup will be important as well. Important to note that in today’s game of rugby the majority of the time is open play, hopefully, we are limiting the number of set pieces (scrums and line outs). With the more open play now, more positions and players become interchangeable, as all need to ruck, maul, pass, pick the ball and most importantly tackle.
Also, I would say watch top level rugby to learn the game quicker. Hope this helps, best of luck to you, welcome to our sport, great choice!
On a personal note, my seniors who just graduated finished undefeated all 4 years in local union merit table matches.
winger at first
when u learn the game play fullback
