Most people published on article directories do it for money, indirectly by using the directory as a traffic and SEO ranking source for their money making site, I believe they prohibit direct affiliate links to sales pages, but maybe not all.
I believe, not sure, some revenue sharing sites I knew like ehow and Associated Content (now a Yahoo property, have stopped paying contributors. There are blog article brokers one can write for like iwriter.com, textbroker.com, there are also freelance marketplaces like odesk or freelancers.com where people will pay about $5 for an article tailored for their blog.
