In a highly competitive niche, powerful backlinks are needed to get high SERP. These can only be achieved by using some automation backlink tool, but require some imaginative and innovative thinking. Here are some examples. Vote them up or down or add your own suggestions.

STEP 1: Get noticed (optional)
Find something wrong with their site: check spelling and grammar, or do a quick check with with different browsers. Write down possible issues, depending on the situation even send screen shots… If possible suggest changes, send link to code fixes… If it is a 404 error that you discover, notify the linking sites with a mention of a replacement page from your site, of course. The webmaster/owner will be delighted (be polite). It’s generally much easier to get in touch with someone when you’re trying to help them.
STEP 2: Reciprocity
Email or comment to the webmasters of the other sites, and tell them that you were so impressed with their site that you have decided to add them to your blogroll, and would appreciate it if they returned the favor. 1 out of 4 times, they do the same back. It is likely that the other site will have a higher rank than yours.

STEP 3 Commitment and Consistency
Get them to make a positive stand about you. Start small, for example by asking them to mention the name of your site on a far-from-the-main-page blog. Mention then, how greatly you appreciate them writing about you. Maybe repeat the trick in a different way again, but remember to keep it amazingly small. After a couple requests, ask them bluntly to put your link on their site. Since people use their own behaviour as a primary source of their own beliefs, and are sub-consciously motivated to be consistent, they are now much more likely to put up your link.

STEP 4. Social Proof
Tell them many others did it before them: People view a behaviour as correct in a given situation to the degree that we see others performing it. Tell them that Big Company X and Large Company X also put up your link, and ask them to do the same. Research indicated that about 5% of the people are initiators, and the other 95% are followers, so count yourself in.
