I do.
First thing- Labour are not the best, but they did not cause the financial mess. The banks did by nearly collapsing. When Osborne talks of ‘the massive public debt’ (which he is increasing) he is actually referring to the amount that Labour had to pay to bail them out. Light touch regulation on the global finance market caused this. Sure, Labour did not regulate- but light touch regulation was a Thatcherite idea introduced by the lady herself. Labour’s actions were simply a continuation of her neoliberal policies.
They also claim that Labour borrowed too much and allowed a massive deficit to accumulate- also incorrect. According to the BBC the average budget deficit of the 1980-92 Tory government was 3.2% the last Labour government from 1997-2007 was 1.1% and the deficit after the crisis 2008-10 was 9.4%. There is a direct link between the financial crisis and the level of government deficit. So actually, Labour kept a fairly good house- better than the Thatcherite government in that regard up until the crisis.
But the worst thing is that they then cut benefits for working people and say they can’t afford it and that Labour gave too much. Labour did not give too much. It was sustainable to do so. The current policies of the Tories are not sustainable. The deficit is up, the public debt is up. Jobs increases have been mostly part time, and all of the indicators suggest that we will fall back into another recession- making it triple dip. Working people have been hit the hardest with massive cut backs in services, such as childcare, libraries, bus services and other vital benefits. Child poverty has risen massively under this government. It is now 1 in four children.
They’ve tried to enforce secret courts and undermine open democracy, they’ve officially privatised the NHS, privatised university oh god, the list goes on…
I certainly do. Cam the Sham opens his mouth before engaging his brain and Georgie Boy, the Chancer of the Exchequer hasn’t got a clue about how a countries economy is run, although he does pretty good with his own finances, making £450,000 out of the sale of one of his homes that was financed by the taxpayer. As for Clegg, he became irrelevant ages ago and just the Tories whipping boy.
Labour 1997-2010: “Let’s import an additional five million people onto this overcrowded island because there are plenty jobs and always will be”
Now THAT’S a joke government.
EVERY Labour gov has put up unemployment and increased the national debt.
Go learn.
Margaret Thatcher was one of the best Prime Ministers that this country has ever had. It is Labour that spend, spend, spend and then run out of money. Take your blinkers off and look at the historical FACTS.
By the way the Bankers weren’t responsible on their own for the mess we were in when Labour was in power. They accounted for 10% of the deficit (not good I agree), but Labour was responsible for the other 90% as a result of its excessive spending and unaffordable borrowing.
I remember Mrs. Thatcher as the only PM who had balls (figuratively at least) and who saved us from that vile red scum Kinnock. I also know that Labour have fouled up the country every time they’ve been in charge.
If it wasn’t for Thatcher this country would be full of lazy, scrounging, unionised dolts.
Oh wait – it is.
Why do labour supporters always forget the mess that Labour ALWAYS leaves the country in?
The last lot even opened the doors for every skanky foreigner in the world to come and sponge off us.
Thatcher’s joke of a government? Even as an American who has never lived in Britain, I can tell you need to get a greater understanding of her administration.
I do.
