Well before getting a pet you should do all of he research that you can in order to have maximum knowledge of your new friend. Buying a good book is usually the best option because the information is there whenever you need it. And you’ll know for sure that it is correct and reliable info.
The basic needs of a hamster are as followed:
-Cage ( preferably meant for hamsters with bars small enough so they won’t escape. And ones that can provide adequate ventilation)
-Bedding (no pine or cedar bedding. It is bad for their repertory systems. Care fresh and yesterday news are good ones, though they may be expensive. So if money is tight, or you wanna cheaper alternative you can use ripped up news paper. Just make sure the ink won’t harm your hamster. Contact your local newspaper and ask them what their ink is made of. These days most are safe for the environment, therefore they are usually safe for pets. But ask just to make sure)
-water bottle (water dishes get soiled easily and are a pain to keep clean, so a plastic water bottle that can be purchased at any pet store usually works great. Keep in mind that some hamsters like to chew so make sure they aren’t chewing your water bottle. And if they do. You can buy metal guards to cover the plastic part. Make sure you clean the water bottle daily to ensure that he is getting clean water)
-food (there are several types of hamster food mixes available on the market today. The best thing to get is something with a lot of variety, but try avoid mixes with sunflower seeds because they are high in fat and should only be given as treats. Read the bag before you buy it. You want something low in fat)
-food dish (obviously used to keep food clean and unsoiled)
-Chew toys (these are very important because hamsters teeth continuously grow, so they need something that they can chew on to keep their teeth at a healthy length. And they also give the hamsters something to do)
-wheel (hamsters are active at night and they enjoy running on wheels to burn of some energy. Stay away from wire wheels or ones with holes because they can get stuck in them and could be injured, or possible killed. Once again there are several types of wheels you can get. And to conserve space in your cage buying the ones that attach to the are the best. And they are also safer because there is no chance of them flipping over and trapping your hammy. (That always used to happen with my gerbils) )
-other toys (you don’t want your hamster to get bored, so provide him with other toys, such as balls, or climbing structures. Once again stay away from plastic because the hamster may ingest it and it can cause harm to him, and he may die. Which wouldn’t be good. So you could buy things such as chew sticks, balls, hide house, and edible tree branches (don’t take stuff from your yard because it may have parasites or bacteria on it that will harm your hamster) there are also several attachments you can buy for some cages such as tubes and secret little hides. Their favourite toy though, is just a simple cardboard toilet paper or paper towel tube. Cheapest and simplest thing that will keep them entertained for some time.
The hamster will need a nice big cage, not a small one, so that its able to run around. It also needs a hamster weel in the cage so it can get exercise. It needs a tube in its cage to get water from. After you have all that, you need bedding. Avoid wooden shavings because they’re not good for the hamsters lungs & can cause respiratory disease. Use something like care fresh. Now, you need hamster food. Buy a pack of hamster food that has many varieties if foods in the pack. This isn’t it, the hamster also needs fresh veggies. Put things like lettuce, cheese, cucumbers, etc. Make sure you check with someone before feeding him a new kind of veggie because they can’t eat every kind. Put the food in a little bowl. After you have all that, you’re basically all set. Put the hamster in the cage & he will be good. Clean his cage every 4 days. Clean his water every few days & put more food when you see the bowl is almost empty. Always make time for your hamster & be the best owner you can be. Give it attention & play with it although not too much because it needs rest too. When you see your hamster is sleeping try not to wake it up. Don’t be loud around them because they’re very gentle pets & this can scare them. Keep it in room temperature, about 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 degrees celcius. Don’t put it by a window since it can make it colder/hotter than it should be. Be very gentle with it when holding it & never drop It. If you see any unusual signs such as a wet bottom, dull-like eyes, wheezing, abnormal breathing, lazy-ness, tired-ness, weight loss/weight gain, & basically anything else you’re not sure about, TAKE IT TO THE VET. Good luck 🙂
You’re going to need a cage that gives it plenty of room to run around in. They need food, water, and hay available to them at all times, so you’ll need to get a dish and a water bottle. I suggest a ceramic dish and a glass water bottle, because rodents will chew through plastic. The best types of hay are either timothy hay or orchard grass, orchard grass being the best. Don’t get alfalfa, it doesn’t have much nutritional value. Your hampster will need somewhere where they can hide away to sleep during the day, because they’re nocturnal, so you’ll need to get him a little dome or something. They’re available at any pet shop, as well as special bedding for hampsters for him to nest in. You’ll probably need to get him some chew sticks and some treats too, because rodents need to be able to chew down their teeth and all pets like treats. Hope this helps. 🙂
