hi~ penzance is beautiful! and hte whole area around it awesome.
if youve got a car, you should take a drive down the lizard peninsular. its a bit of treck by public transport, but you might find it worth it. if youve read daphne du amurier (and if youve not, DO, she’s brilliant) she lived down there, and some of her books are set there. its really beautiful, with cute coves each side, and morelenad down the middle, and thickly tangled woodland between. theres one of those huge satelite places there, and at the top is RAF culdrose, tho i dont think you see around it, you can certainly see them taking off and landing sometimes.
there are celtric crosses, and the odd stone line etc scattered about there, but i cant think of anything exceptional. it is, tohugh, one of my favourite places in the world, as ive had gorgeous trips there, made brilliant sand castles on the white beaches (youre never too old), gone rock pooling, or just sat and read a book. i dont really like ice cream, but i heard roskilly’s ice cream was good and tried it- its the best ive EVER tasted, and its incredibly moreish 😛 its sold all over cornwall, and they have centre nr st keverne, tho its not madly exciting enough to drive miles for. but def sample it at least one.
my pic of a beach down the lizard~ http://oi49.tinypic.com/260xrsy.jpg
view from the coastal path~ http://oi50.tinypic.com/b5o8ew.jpg i dont know if youre a really walkerish type of person, but you could try the coastal paths, too. they are really beautiful,a nd most of the time youre alone. theyre lovely all the way around cornwall and devon. its mostly pretty easy going, and you dont need to wear loads of Walker Gear to do it. i walk in flip flops or birkenstocks, and ive never broken any bones. plus it means i can wade through streams, or into the sea 😀 some people think coast walks are a bit full on, i guess cos it involves cliffs, but its rarely very steep.
ive not been to any of the national trust etc houses in cornwall since i was about 14, so i cant really remember them, or comment.
obv youll know st micheal’s mount, but newlyn harbour, along the other end of penzance beach, is really pretty too. mousehole (pronounced maw- zelle) is nice, but a bit cutesy. further west, along the south coast, is treen beach, which is beautiful. the famous minnak theatre is next to it, and you can go round by road to it, or take a horribly precipitious climb up fro the beach (if youve got vertigo, dont, ha ha)~ this is the view from the steps, down to the beach~ http://oi49.tinypic.com/260xrsy.jpg
the sea is really tropical looking there ; )
you could certainly head out to the scillies for a day trip, easily, by air or sea, which are GOR~GEOUS. we used to spend easter there every year (heh. the sound of rain always reminds me of it, tho im sure it was sunny sometimes when we went. tho i do have pics of us in winter coats, ha ha). its usually pretty nice in the summer, tho.
the area west from penzance is beautiful- avoid sennen, and st ives, which are horribly packed and touristy, but the rest of the area is cool, and parts are very wild.http://www.intocornwall.com/features/arc… this is a list of neolithic sites across the county.
penzance itsself is really nice to wander around-down on the sea front is a lido, which is really nice. tehre are some great galleries, and near the lido, but up the hill, theres a beautiful chuch with palm tress in the graveyard. you can sit there and have a quiet lunch and look down toward the sea.
round market jew street is lovely, with cool antique shops, theres a nice park in the middle of town, etc.
have fun! i miss it badly X
