You need to do some research and narrow down the possibilities.
First, what do you like to do and do well? Needlecrafts? Ceramics? Duct tape? Leather? Wood? Something else entirely? Drawing? Photography? Start with a skill you already have and build on it.
Next, what is your “target market”? Who are the people you’ll be persuading to purchase your product? Are they classmates? A tourist market in a history-rich location? At the beach? In the mountains? In a city? Identify the people with money who might well buy what you make and study what they are willing to pay money for.
Then, identify a niche that currently is not being filled. Are there lots of baby and toddler girls who DO NOT have tutu skirts and DO have moms with cash who will spend it on their babies? Then make and sell tutus. Or fluffy hair ornaments. Or headbands with knit or crocheted flowers. Are there lots of teen boys who hike and otherwise like to look cool? Paracord bracelets and belts might be your product of choice. Retirees from someplace else who want to steep themselves in the “local culture”? Then food mixes (hushpuppy mix, bean soup mix, flannel cake mix, and so on–whatever is easy and a “local favorite”) or “A Trail Guide to Beach Living” or something of the sort could be your best seller. Do people who might buy from you like colorful, whimsical, attractive products of fabric, yarn, or duct tape? Can you find free patterns or design your own unique patterns that people will just have to have? Is there a tourist attraction that people would pay to be photographed near? All you need is a good camera and a good printer (along with photo paper and ink cartridges)–with mats and frames optional and extra $$$.
Determine where you can take your product and meet your customer. Spring into Summer and then on to the Christmas Market season, you have lots of festivals (in my area, the Collard Festival, Strawberry Festival, Shad Festival, Mulllet Festival, Herring Festival, Tulip Festival, Chocolate Festival, and any number of other festivals are coming up in the next couple of months) and street fairs, not to mention Shows (Women’s Show, Home Show, Home & Garden Show, Food Show, Crafts Shows, and so on up to Christmas Shows) along with local, regional, and state Farmer’s Markets. Or on the sidewalk near a tourist attraction.
And determine where you can get the best prices for your preferred materials. Determine how much it’s going to cost you to rent a booth, set up shop, get electricity if you need it, and otherwise go into business. Run the numbers to determine how much you have to sell and at what price to break even and to make a profit.
Once you have all the research done, you can sit down and make some plans, sort through the options, and select the optimal product(s), venue(s), and time(s).
