I really LOVE listening to bands like Bring Me the Horizon, Asking Alexandria, Muse, Greenday, Pierce The Veil, The Architects etc. But I really don’t know how to play a musical instrument and I don’t have much knowledge on the music itself. I feel weird because all of my friends are really deep into this stuff and they know how to play instruments..while I really have no clue about music notes or anything. Do you think I value music as much as them?
Appreciating music is enough to be “into” it.
Learning an instrument can help you understand music better from a technical point as well as being involved but when it comes to it, it’s the love of the sound, whether it’s coming from you or someone else, that matters.
I play guitar (and play Muse songs!) but being a guitarist doesn’t make me feel like I’m “deeper” than other people. I know other people who listen to all sorts of music, mainstream and weird, niche bands that I just can’t appreciate and don’t play an instrument. Those people are the hardcore music fans.
So no, being able to play an instrument doesn’t mean you’re more “into” music than someone else.
Yes, you just don’t value PLAYING music as much, you just value LISTENING to and ENJOYING music more, which in it’s own right can be just as valid. If you enjoy music and it inspires you to do something good in life then that is good and shows equal validity to someone who plays compared to someone who just listens and enjoys.
Your appreciation for music cannot be linked to whether or not you can read music or play an instrument.
