I understand how encouraging the employee to continue doing a good work makes sense.
But why these other points make sense?
-encouraging employee’s coworkers to improve their performance make sense?
-increased authority for employees who do good work.
-allows employee to choose projects or tasks

The rewards are that: 1) You get to keep your job, and 2) There is opportunity for advancement.
There are good companies, and there are bad ones. In some places, the attitude is: “How much *s…* are you willing to put up with to stay on this job? In a tight job market, people will put up with a lot. On the other hand, good employees are hard to find. The secret is to find a good employee and treat them very well.
