How Can I Be More Comfortable Around Bigger Horses?

I was working with a large half draft horse with some issues. I think that was the turning point of my confidence dropping when working with larger horses. I find that I am SO much more comfortable around the smaller Quarter horses and especially the Arabs which are my absolute favorite horses to work around… just seems like I can read them better and just get along better with that breed. They can be flighty but I’m not intimidated when they happen to spook. If they act up I feel like I have the ability to direct them.
When that half draft spooked it frightened me badly. she would just be a bulldog, running through any aids I gave her. It’s like she would forget I was there. She would always step on my toes or come close to it.
I used to not be so uncomfortable around my friend’s 17hh gelding but now I am! 🙁 if I walk him I’m stretch my arm out so he’s further away and look at my feet and his huge feet when I used to not be so cautious.
Any advice? Should I try to get more comfortable around bigger horses or should I just stick to my little Arabs lol?

Question About Donating Horses?

I teach a college equestrian program which uses horses from another facility not otherwise affiliated with the college. There are people who would like to donate horses to the college program through this facility, but they would like to still get their tax breaks. Would they be able to donate to this facility for use by the college team and club?
So that I don’t get the warnings about the IRS, I will of course be consulting a lawyer. I’ve been trying to do my own research, but there is very little technical information on the subject for lay people. I don’t happen to know any tax lawyers, and I want to see if anyone knows a bit about it before I might have to pour money into it. So, if someone sees this subject and happens to know anything, I would greatly appreciate input and advice.
Thanks for your time.

Help Me Find A College Path?

I want to own a restaurant one day. Not a franchise but a corporate one. Medieval Times to be more specific. It’s a gift shop, photo department, intense marketing, countless jobs in and out of the castle, a 2 hour extremely rehearsed show with real weapons, a full double wide stable and muse for falcons, a local secret ranch for all of their horses to roam and take a break, and a food service industry.
What kind of college path should I pursue to eventually work my way up with hard work and determination and look good enough on paper to eventually own one of these?

Where To Start? – Riding And Competing For Other People?

Can you give me some ideas on how and where to contact people about exercising/training and competing for other people, i know some people who compete and ride for others and i would love to as well, im not on a livery yard so i cant really start there – i currently compete up to foxhunter and have basically ‘moulded’ my ponies and horses myself, i just would love to help other people and ride different horses with a different scenery for a change! Where should i start asking around? I’m in the UK, and would i get paid? Either ponies or horses – i know ponies inside out and i’m fairly good with naughty ones too but would rather be show jumping. I would love as many ideas as you can think of would be great and as much detail as possible – thanks in advanced! Oh i’ve just turned 16 by the way 🙂 so only till december in ponies for the affiliated side of things 🙁 Sorry if some parts don’t make sense i haven’t slept for two days!

Any Schooling Tips?/?

Hey I am a pretty advanced ride but I am always open to suggestions on how to improve my schooling.
I’m currently riding 8 horses, all ranging in experience. But at the moment, I’m mostly riding my own -14.3hh welsh, only just got him, used to jump affiliated but then was left in a field wasted. He also used to event, so did have an outline, but his muscle is poor and he’s lost his outline. Any tips on how to strengthen muscles, I know down hill work is good, which I do 3 times a week but any more tips. I have jumps and poles so can to gridwork and jumping.
I also have my gorgeous mare, who came to me and she was a horse that was very nervous as she had been in her old home all her life, so she was completely out of her comfort zone and was cantering on the spot, jumping around, just so scared. (Bless her) So I’m currently riding another horse to give her confidence and leading her in hand, which she seems to like a lot because she gets to know her surroundings. Her previous home used to go to shows which was local as they could hack there, but I can see soooo much potential in her I want to do shows all over the country, which I think she was more than able. But I need some tips on how to make her more confident and comfortable out of her surroundings. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help!

Maintaining Usef/ushja Amateur Status?

Hey. I compete in jumpers and am trying not to loose my amateur status. I’ve never taught for money (often volunteer my time teaching for free or coaching at shows though – always unpaid) but am getting ready to undertake in something that I’m not sure would cause me to loose my amateur status.
My parents own a small property (10 acres) that we have slowly built into a small equestrian center. It was just me riding at the barn then my brother but now we’ve started into sales. With the bad market we’ve found a little niche taking in unbroke fuglies off craigslist, breaking them, putting 3 months on them and selling. Sometimes we make money off them but more often that not the ones in poor condition cost us far more than we sell them for but we enjoy it.
I manage the horses on a daily basis, train them, market them and show them to potential buyers. Does this cause me to loose my amateur status? Since I have done fairly well at selling these horses, a few people have asked me to ride, market and show their horses to buyers. I don’t get paid for this but if/when I can get the horse to sell, I get 10% of the sale price for my efforts. (Usually about $100-$200 for 4+ months of work).
So basically, can I be a barn manager and sales agent without loosing my amateur status?
Thanks
