This link should get you off to a good start. Generally in the U.S., youth soccer works this way.
Players who are very serious about the game join a club team that plays year round. Club teams usually don’t play is league matches. They play in tournaments. They play in a lot of them.
When a person reaches high school age, he or she can play high school soccer or stay with their club team. You can’t play both at the same time in the U.S. If you play high school soccer then you can’t participate in any club team matches during the high school season. Yuo can train with your club team.
From there it gets a bit dicey. College soccer is very common. Most colleges and universities have teams that compete for the College Cups at every level (3 levels in the NCAA).
However some players may be good enough to go professional after high school and opt for the MLS or a foreign league if they have that level of talent.
I believe making the national team is a matter of being invited to try out. I don’t think the various national teams have open tryouts. If you are really good then you may get invited to try out.
For the post college age non pro player, there are the parks and recreation leagues that most larger towns have. These people play because they love the game and enjoy competing.
