If you want more traffic you can either pay for it PPC (pay per click) or go the free route SEO (search engine optimiztion).
PPC will cost you a bit if your website is in a competitive niche. When the money runs out so does the traffic.
SEO is free but it takes longer to get the ball rolling because you are going to wait on Google to process everything.
I use both. PPC to get traffic to my sites in the beginning and to roll a profit as well running SEO in the background to build a more stable, long term effect so that when my SEO begins to show progress I tend to back off my PPC and let the flood gates take over.
SEO is basically optimizing your website for the search engines using keywords (or search queries that people type into Google to find things) to optimize your site around.
You build backlinks back to your site by using various methods, blog commenting, creating profiles in forums, and writing/submitting articles to top article directories.
I can’t get into the entire process in one go but swing by the Warriorforum and hang out in the SEO section and you will see others there asking the same questions as well as the Gurus answering them.

I would say that PPC (Pay per click) is a great way to start to see how the market is related to the specific terms you target on you PPC campaign.
Once your keyword research and PPC experimenting is complete, I would say that you should rather push the money from PPC into SEO as this shows long term results.
Spend some time adding content to your website as often as you can, as more pages indexed in the website the better chance you have of getting found on Google.

Good content is most important – and I don’t mean loads of keywords, I mean ux. Write your content FOR your visitors, write something YOU would find interesting and your half way there.
Then validate your code – google w3c validator. VERY important.
Then get your description tags sorted also very important.
Then keep your page load quick – google website optimisation.
Then get on webmaster tools – submit a sitemap and check the HTML suggestions regularly – google will tell you if there’s anything it doesn’t like.
Do these things and I GUARANTEE you’ll see an increase.
It gets harder after this. Page structure – make sure things are in the right order – title, h1, h2, paragraphs. Put your important keywords near the top.
If you’ve done all this, google wordtracker – find the popular terms and track your positions – if you want to move up, make sure these terms are in your title tags etc.
Even harder – build some links (genuine ones) and use the keywords in the links.
Then keep repeating all these steps whilst adding content regularly.
If it sounds like hard work il do it for you for a fee

Everybody knows that web site promotion is vital for website success. The good news is that promoting your site boils down to two simple strategies:
    1. Creating compelling content that site visitors and search engines ‘enjoy’, and
    2. Building inbound links to your site (and repeating).

The three most popular tactics for website promotion are:
    – Search engine optimization (SEO)
    – Pay Per Click (PPC)
    – Affiliate Marketing
They all have their respective pro’s and cons, but if you’re on a tight budget, SEO and affiliate marketing are things that you can do yourself, without costing a cent. If you’ve got some money to work with, try PPC for some well targeted keywords and see how that goes.
