No. He started with Philadelphia and the Cubs clearly passed him over for Quade. Poetry says Sandberg takes the Phillies to a World Championship in the future.
Sandberg does have some history with the Phils, as it was his original organization. So it isn’t surprising that he took the job there….Also, Charlie Manuel isn’t getting any younger, so this is a position that could lead to a big league job within a few years.
As for “what happened” with the Cubs, this was case of the team wanting to improve with as few major (i.e. “expensive”) changes as possible. Chicago still has a veteran-laden team with some untradable contracts…These veterans responded well to Quade after Lou stepped down and Cubs management is probably hoping they continue to do so.
Giving Ryno the job would have meant a complete shift in direction. He made his reputation building young talent in the minors…There’s really no telling how he’d get along with all the vets on the big-league roster.
It’s a bit of a surprise but when all is said and done, Sandberg is in a much better position back with the Phillies organization. The Cubs continue to wander in the endless dessert of mediocrity. The truth is, Charlie Manuel has been a very fortunate manager. He came to Philadelphia just at the right time. Personally I think he’s overrated.
How ironic that Sandberg, who never went to, much less won a world series during his entire career as a player, would return to the franchise that didn’t want him, to eventually win his ring.
He was until Pimella asked to be released and the Cubs made Quade interm
he would of been the Manager if that didn’t happen
and they say things happen for a reason and i hope he does well in the Philly organization as he has done with the Cubs
He started with Philly and was traded for Ivan Dejesus
Many Cub fans including me was sad to se him leave they way he did
and many wish him the best
No, not at all, I heard he was pretty “miffed” about losing Cubs managers’ job to Quade, and they basically released him. I was hoping he would have been a candidate for the Mets’ manger job.
He’s Manuel’s replacement in Philly.
No Ryne Sandberg had some history with the Phillies and once Lou Piniella retired from being the manager that there was alot current managers and some former managers that wanted the job that the Cubs gave the job to the person that they felt was more qualified

If Don Mattingly can manage the Dogers, and Ted Williams could manage the Senators then Ryne Sandberg can manage the Iron Pigs…

So how long until they stupidly trade him to the Cubs for a second time?

When the Phillies hit the skids, Manuel will go, and this is his replacement. Will it happen in 2011?
Good news for Sandberg. What do the Cubs have to offer as an organization? Another 100 plus years of nothing.
