I’m a decently experienced actress that’s done freelance before, but I’ve been looking at taking the next step in my career. So I was applying to a whole bunch of agencies in my area and got a call back from one of them wanting an interview/audition…but when I looked at them again, they’re actually a talent management company. Their owner is SAG affiliated, so I don’t think it’s a SCAM, but is it a good idea to get a manager? I’ve gotten rejected from some of the other agencies I submitted to, would getting a manager help or hinder my career?
Advice?
Managers are NOT recognized by SAG. The manager could be an actor who is SAG saying he’s a manager.
ANYONE can be a manager. There are no State Licenses or any kind of paperwork to be a manager. Your mom can become your manager and take 15% of what you make.
A lot of newer actors get a manager to help them get a theatrical agent. Or sometimes the manager acts as an agent and submits you for theatrical auditions.
Some things to ask when choosing a manager:
-How many clients? If the client base is over 25 for one manager, then they’re probably not very good. A manager is supposed to be more hands on and person compared to an agent.
-Are the clients actually working?
-What relationships does the manager have with agents/casting directors. A good manager could pick up a phone and get you a meeting with an agent or casting director.
-10-15% is the percentage that a manager can take. If more, then look elsewhere.
-NO UPFRONT COSTS. If the manager is asking for upfront money, RUN!
here’s a good Slate article explaining the reason why a lot of actors are now using managers instead of agents. enjoy!
