Why Do Games Cost So Much More Than Movies?

an average new release game goes for $50 or more, a movie goes for around $10. why is this? is it because of a smaller supply? the industry caters to a more niche market? is it more costly to develop a game compared to a movie? please, add your thoughts, you have my thanks 🙂

I think its because they were released in Theaters. Also they get money from being on TV when on.
    IDK?
I don’t believe it costs more developing a game, just more work.

Think about it this way, how much time do you put into a movie? 2-3 hours right?
Well with video games its multiple hours every week or day depending on the person.
When developers make a game they need a whole team of people behind them designing, adding sounds, graphics, etc. I’m pretty sure some of the same goes for movies but again a movie won’t last you as long as a game.

We’ll video games make at least twice as much as movies each year in America. My guess is that it’s because there’s so much more involved in video games. With movies you watch it once and, well, that’s it!

Nope, movies cost much more money to make than games. They also require more people to work on them rather than games which take a group of less than 100 sometimes 50 people.
The reason that games cost more money is that a single player game on average lasts 20 times longer than a movie. If the game is competitive and popular such as most main stream fighting and shooting games, it can be played for tournaments, sponsors, huge events for years until the sequel. People may spend countless time on practice and getting good at games whereas movies don’t require any type of effort other than paying attention. Competitive gaming is just like a sport believe it or not, those guys aren’t just pressing random buttons you know.
But aside from the competitive aspect like stated before, games tend to last much longer therefore provide a much extended period of entertainment. (Of course this depends on what game your playing but hopefully you don’t waste your money on bad games)
If new movies cost as much as new games in theaters the pricing would be unrealistic, but also on that note games don’t get millions of people to buy them like movie tickets do within mere opening weeks, well aside from the select awesome ones.

I don’t know the exact reasons why current gen game prices are at $50-$60. I do know that they went up when the latest consoles (Xbox360, then Wii and PS3) came out. And since that price point was established the games coming out after would basically be locked at that price. There are bargain games and some games (like the HAWX series) are released a little bit cheaper, but the mast majority are $50-$60.

It’s where the video game industry gets their money. They actually lose money on the consoles. They have to make money somehow and they do. Developing the game cost money, but burning it onto a disk sure is cheap. its kinda ridiculous how much they charge

Where I live, new games cost over hundred dollars while new movies cost about 30 dollars.
