What Should I Do If I Am Uncomfortable At My University…?

I currently attend San Diego State University. There is nothing wrong with the campus, housing, food, faculty, nor resources in this school. However, I don’t feel as if I blend in well with the student body on campus. As a generalization, everyone here seems to be a frat boy meathead or sorority girl just looking to have a great time. Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a great time, but it doesn’t seem that they take their education seriously. It’s something you would see from the Jersey Shore or the Hills on MTV. Some people have recommended me to give it some more time to settle down. But, I am afraid to take the risk as I may not even find my niche or crowd settled here. In all seriousness, I believe the people around you make the joyful experience, but I can’t seem to blend in with anyone here at all. I’m just not part of the “cool” crowd.
As of today, I still have an opportunity to transfer schools to another Cal State, but it’s more of a commuter school. I feel so lost and I don’t want to regret my decision by staying or leaving. What do you think?

University’s not for everyone. I think you should still give it some time, but if you’re seriously considering transferring out, why not to a smaller community college or private school?

In every University there is a diverse crowd, ranging from those who are there just to party, those who are there just to study, and every possible mindset in between. It sounds like you just haven’t found the group of people who have your mindset yet.
You aren’t going to find them by just going to classes and just hanging around the cafeteria or the quad. You need to dig in just a little. I suggest talking to the professors of your favorite classes and asking for the names of other students they admired from previous classes to connect with. Also, if you have any interests, scan the web or the university web site for organizations or clubs you can attend to meet other peeps that like the same things. Even if you don’t have hobbies or interests, you can always join a group that studies together and is organized around a core subject that you will have to take (i.e., math, chemistry, biology, history, writing, etc.).
The cool thing is, you don’t need to find a big group of people. Just finding two to three people that have the same outlook on college as you do will make for a great experience, both while you attend and for the rest of your life.
