imagine tomorrow every land animal except chickens went extinct, then you come back and look at the earth in say 100,000,000 years time, will the chickens have filled all ecological niches left by the other animals by then?
Maybe maybe not, there are still aquatic animals in the past they have evolved onto the land it could happen again. While the chickens would have no predators they would expand population wise and begin to adapt and evolve. Yet the factors that would determine that are easily altered and difficult or predict. Such as climate, continental shift, and sea level. I do think that if that were to happen all of those empty niches would be filled, that is nature and evolution way. I also think that you would not recognize a single organism, they would be that different.
If the only land vertabra left was chickens in 100,000,000 years they too would more than likely be extinct because they have no concern for conservation and either disease or famine would kill them off. For a while they may begin to evolve and fill the niches left behind but not for a long time.
