I just launched a classifieds site in a particular niche market and have done a small email campaign with reasonable success, but how can I get more traffic from the web? I don’t think I want to hire anybody-I’m looking for tips that I can do myself.

In the long run, the best way (among others) is to get high quality and RELEVANT backlinks pointing back to your classifieds site.
Put up genuine posts in blogs, participate actively in forums with a link in your signature, write informative articles and distribute your content etc.
Commit to do this everyday. It only takes 20 ~ 30 minutes a day.
If you’re consistent, the magic is bound to happen.
Forget software or services that promise thousands of backlinks overnight. You’ll hurt your site and regret for the rest of your life.
Also ignore those services that promise to deliver ‘unique hits’ or ‘guaranteed visitors’. These are usually scams. Even if they do deliver SOME hits, the visitors are of really low quality who aren’t interested in your site in the first place.
Think long term, have a plan, and execute the plan.
