Sorry to say, but my dog’s life was saved by flea/tick medicine that is now OTC (wasn’t years ago)…Advantage. We had been using Frontline as a preventative, yet he still got the fleas. We tried just about everything to get rid of the fleas and treated the house and yard every other week. He became so anemic due to the fleas that he had to have a blood transfusion at the animal hospital. Vet gave us Advantage to use (a medication we had never heard of before) and it has since worked to keep fleas away. So how does it harm our pets and us? What proof do you have?
As for Hartz, then I agree, it should be taken off the market. But apparently there must not have been a large enough percentage of dogs/cats that have had Hartz flea/tick medication that had a deadly reaction.
Not all OTC medications are bad – Advantage and Frontline are now available without a prescription, and are safe and effective. As for the other crap like Hartz – well, it makes too much money for the companies that produce it. Never mind that it kills thousands of animals a year – the comanies have more money than pet owners do, and that is what rules the legal world, I’m afraid. All you can do is warn people who are buying it and may not be aware of what they are about to do. In most cases a kind word to the would-be buyer ends up in them putting back the poison, and picking up a package of Advantage instead.
If you don’t think that it’s all about money, even YA allows a “knowledge partner” from Hartz who can recommend their products to the unsuspecting ….
