I prefer to work for myself doing the same thing I did as an employee but now as an independent contractor. The pay rate would be the same. I simply do not want to follow their dress code, be affiliated with the company as an employee, be evaluated by their standards, but my own standards which exceeds their standards, etc.
How would this work and what would be the reservations if any when I inform to company of my preference to be an independent contractor?
Dress codes, safety standards, codes of conduct and ethics usually apply to all workers, contractors or employees.
A contractor would not necessarily get any benefits. They would be responsible for paying their own taxes, too.
A contractor designation also depends on the job and what they are asking you to do. These are outlined in IRS Circular E (Publication 15). If a job is structured so that it fits the definition of an employee, a company can’t call it a contractor position to skirt their obligations under the law. So, they may have to restructure the position to be able to legally call you a contractor. They may / may not be willing to do that.
