alright well, my daughter and i live in the state of massachusetts. im a single mother and shes 13. she had a severe anxiety disorder along with rarely severe OCD. it contains her and i both to the house. she throws up constantly from stress, and had back problems from holding so many knots back there. we both cry at least once a day usualy, and the condidtion she lives with is horrible. we are both very spiritual, so dont get us wrong, we love god and we feel blssed that it isnt something more than this. anyway, do to mydaughters severe condition, it was getting hard for her to hand write because her OCD and anxiety always gave her bad thoughts in her head, and when she would write words on a paper at the same time of thinking those bad thoughts, she would feel like it would definetly happen, since the bad thoughts would get cought between the pencil and the paper, or something like that, im not really sure how she discribed it. so her work strted to fall behind and her teachers started to give her more stress, so she ended up crying in school, which is something she hasnt done k or 1st grade. shes a very stong girl!so it was so hard for me to watch my baby go through this everyday, she stayed home for about 2 months. then the school filed against us. so we went to court and the judge ruled that she had to go to school. after court is over im going to try to get her into some sort of program such as home tutoring so she can not be so stressed, (at least until her meds start working.) before the whole court thing came up i was on the right track with this but them when the truency issue came up, they started ignoring me! i cannot homeschool because as a single mother i have to make a living. i dont know what to do anymore! shes even been asessed at a mental hospital! pls help me! do i have any options after the whole court thing is over?
btw- my daughter has always been in spectrum and the top classes since she was 8 years old, she doesnt usually get lower than an eighty on a test, and she is very bright.
sorry this was so long, i just want help for my daughter! thank you so much!
For some reason, there are “secrets” that MANY schools don’t like to let parents in on and two, in particular, that you NEED in order to make sure your daughter gets the education she deserves.
The first one is a biggie, but its simply the words “Free and appropriate”. As in, “Every child in the United States has the RIGHT to a Free and appropriate education.”
A child with the issues that you describe your daughter having needs modifications in order to be able to learn and the school, whether the school likes it or not, they MUST make her education available to her by taking whatever steps are needed to make giving her an education possible. I wouldn’t count on it, but there should already be an IEP (Individual Education Plan) or an ILP (Individual Learning Plan) in place due to her psychiatric history and the recorded “truancy problems”. Usually these plans are initiated by the school, if there isn’t one in place and your school hasn’t already addressed setting one up with you, demand a meeting so that you can get the wheels in motion and everything on record immediately.
The second big “secret” is called a “504 Plan” or simply a “504” (your school may call it something else, they all seem to have their own terminology for it) It falls under the Rehabilitation act of 1973, in section 504, and provides for reasonable accommodations or assistance as necessary be made available for any student with disabilities. (My apologies. I’m not trying to be hurtful and I hate to say it so bluntly, but at this point your daughter’s problems are considered a disability because they are affecting her life on so many levels.)
Once you say the words “Free and appropriate” (and watch the look on their faces, because it’s usually priceless!) and start the simple process of getting the 504 in place (I’m not being sarcastic, it’s really not difficult!), the school and each of it’s teachers are REQUIRED to do whatever they can, within very wide limits, to make sure your daughter is given the tools she needs to be successful in school. This now includes online schooling (I know because its the option that we’ve found most appropriate for my daughter.)
And as a nice side effect – you’re out of hot water with the truancy board because she is attending classes like she should. (Online schools do keep attendance so your “record” as a parent will be cleared too!)
Sideways subject: I don’t know exactly what the requirements for enrollment are, but if you don’t have a good online school there check into JeffCo’s 21st Century Virtual Academy. They are a public school, the classes are incredibly well structured, the faculty is the best I’ve ever worked with and the teachers are phenomenal – they are responsive to each child’s needs and want to teach! (That in itself is a rare find!) We had her enrolled in another online program and the differences are shocking. The K-12 Program (National) looked good on paper, but was nothing more than great marketing with no follow through. What JeffCo is doing is amazing and, in my opinion, should be the standard that all online schools are held to. I’m providing a link to them below. (There are kids attending from all over the world so where you live isn’t an issue, but I don’ t know if those kids lived in the district at some point before moving where they are now or if enrollment is just that wide open.) Good Luck and please, feel free to contact me if I can do anything else to help. I’ve been where you are with no one to guide me – I hate the idea of anyone else going through what we did!
Hey there
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder that afflicts many people. While some television shows and movies make light of the symptoms of OCD, people who struggle with it find their issues to be anything but funny. They often wonder if there is a cure. The answer is yes. Read on to learn how to cure OCD.
7 Ways to cure your OCD!
1. Recognize that OCD is a symptom of a deeper problem. OCD does not happen in a vacuum. OCD is an anxiety disorder that is a symptom of a deeper emotional issue. To cure OCD, you must first heal the emotional pain that is creating the anxiety driving the OCD.
2. Explore the underlying cause of your anxiety issues. People who have suffered from some form of trauma often struggle with OCD. People who have endured trauma lacked control over their traumatizing situation. OCD is a way to take control of things that do not matter, because the person feels a lack of control over the things that do matter.
3. Express your underlying anger. Anger that has not been expressed often manifests itself as anxiety. Because anger must express itself in some fashion, the repressed anger turns on the person in the form of anxiety. To cure OCD, you must get in touch with your unexpressed anger and give it a voice. Explore why you have repressed anger and learn how to express it in a safe manner. As you express your anger, you will experience less anxiety, which, in turn, will help you cure your OCD.
