Wooden furniture; Bookcases nightstands and the like. However, this is the gimmick: Secret compartments. I built myself a nightstand. I have a well equipped woodshop. I designed it with a secret compartment. “The boy” watches TV in the bedroom while I’m at work. The remote controls either end up sticky from the various sugary foods he eats, get lost or he takes the batteries out and looses the back. No more. The remote controls go in the secret compartment in the morning before I leave for the day.
Now, I have considered building furniture and selling it on eBay – I have a 100% rating as a seller – but the market is flooded with such items. It is cheap too. I can’t build this stuff for cheap unless I want to end up working for less than $1 an hour. Furniture items have to have something going for them. Either bizarre design – deer horn table legs, made out of pieces of electric guitars, etc., or are antique in order to be able to command an appropriate price. I do high quality work. It takes time and premium materials. I can build excellent quality furniture with all kinds of hidden compartments. Is there a demand for this? Would you buy something like this? How much would you pay? Can you make any suggestions for design?
On eBay pretty much anything sells. Since you are making something there is so much work that goes into making the product. What you would need to do is, if the market is saturated already, you will need to do a little extra work to make your product stand out. Have a website built and update it with your product and what it is that separates it from other furniture. Connect with people via social media outlets to build a fan base.
You can also try etsy to sell your product. It is a good website for people who build their own products and a good way to showcase them.
“On eBay pretty much anything sells.” is a flat-out lie. The days when people would buy something off eBay just for the novelty of it are long, long gone.
Honestly, I think it would be very hard to sell a lot of furniture on eBay because of the shipping cost, which may be more than the price of the item itself. eBay may be a part of your business strategy, but I wouldn’t rely on it for too many sales.
Also you have a lot of competition. Even Wal-Mart ships some furniture these days. I’m not sure how far hidden compartments will get you in this saturated market.
If you want to sell handmade furniture on the Internet, you should make your own website and sell from there, or you should sell from Etsy.
