For a new shooter I would not recommend a small frame/5 shot 357 Magnum.
I’d try to find a Ruger 4″ Security Six for sale somewhere. You won’t find these new anymore, you’re looking for used guns. One of the finest 357’s Ruger ever made, and they discontinued it. Bill Ruger said they were breaking even on every Security and Speed Six revolver they made.
Look for a GP100 by Ruger if the Security Six is impossible to find where you are.
Next start looking at S&W’s. Model 686 or 586, if you like Stainless Steel look at the 686, blued steel is the 586. These are the “L” framed pistols, if you want smaller look at K frame like the Model 19, larger look at N frame such as the Model 27 or 28.
Personally I would avoid taurus and rossi, I have my reasons but to avoid offending the braztech fanboys I will leave it at that.
EAA Windicator is probably the best kept secret for economy magnums that are actually worth a damn.
Ruger: GP100 and SP101. Rugers are extremely durable, quite accurate, and have very good pluses: no safeties, very easy cylinder release, and backstrap for the hand’s comfort.
Smith and Wesson: Very accurate, could hold up to 8 rounds of .357 Magnum, and have light and crisp triggers.
Colt: Though not as durable as Rugers and Smiths, they’re extremely accurate and have very convenient triggers, plus they’re the best looking .357 Magnum revolvers (especially the Pythons). Too bad they were discontinued before the end of the millenium.
Edit: Cane Toad Mutiny’s words should be taken VERY seriously.
I’ll put in one more vote for the GP100 Ruger. I’ve had one of mine for over 20 years and have fired some crazy hot handloads out of it over the years, still shoots and looks like new. They are just about the toughest .357 revolvers on the market.

In this order. Ruger, Smith and Wesson and finally Taurus.
15 years ago the order would have been Smith and Wesson, Ruger and then Taurus
Read every word of what Cane Toad Mutiny said again.
Ruger 1st,Taurus second.
I don’t want to pay for the name of S&W.
