I have always had a dream home in my mind that doesn’t fit what I see in the general “cookie cutter” type of homes available. When the time comes to get my first home I’d like to design it myself or work with a architect who will help me get the home I want. This includes secret rooms and a very specific floor plan that is unlike any house I have ever seen. I’m not talking about any weird circular obscure layout, just something that isn’t so standard and boring like most track homes on the market today.
If I start designing the layout myself, picking out the correct hardware and doing all the research possible would that save me a decent amount of money?
Although I doubt I will ever get this accomplished because of money, I still want to try…and I’m hoping if I can get it out on paper as thorough as possible that it might just lead me closer to my dream home one day.
Opinions? Ideas? suggestions?
I’m not sure about saving you money but perhaps a lot of time! Which time can be money, so perhaps it would.
Have you ever considered your dream home floor print to be made out of Cob? Cobs can be absolutely amazing, custom and are very affordable. This would save you lots of money if you can contribute to the construction of it!
Are you an architect? Do you know sound building practices, and do you understand the term LOAD bearing beams?
Then if the answer is yes, go ahead and do it your self. If not you are on the road to disaster.
If you are worth 100 million or more this is a great idea. Otherwise compromise with some local contractors to come as close as you want.
Shop around for some good home design software. You’ll have a lot of fun exploring floorplans and finishes. When you’ve settled on a good look, you’ll save a little time when you can show a builder what you like, but be ready to listen to their advice about practicality and value.
I don’t know if it would save you a lot of money, but it would save you a lot of time when you meet up with an architect.
I would also suggest living in a variety of homes so you can get a good feeling for how space is used — you can rearrange bookshelves every month to create some of the features you want in your dream house, and try living around it.
Also, if you have a chance, volunteer to build houses. This will give you great skills, and a better knowledge about what can be done. You can save some money by finishing things yourself.
Finally, listen to people who have built their own houses.
(-: And, see if you can make two dream houses — a practice one to sell, and a real one where you refine your ideas.
