How Can I Deal With The Life Here? I Literally Have Like No Friends At This College In The City?

Im a freshman in college in a big city. But its not a college friendly city. I feel like I literally have no friends. Im not a complete anti social person, its just that many friendships have drifted away. Especially since I dont live on campus (i live 25 min away by subway downtown in a university affiliated housing. It has like 1% of all the students at my college)
There was a group on facebook for my class. Literally all my close friends in the beginning of the year were from that facebook group (we chatted over the summer and stuff). Without that group, I would have had literally 0 friends the entire year.
My closest friend ever at this school was a guy named Steven. We got along so well and we were such great friends. So close to the point where we actually dated. Long story short it ended badly because he was horrible at communication. He was too immature to discuss a relationship, even though we literally in one. Just not officially. He never spoke to me again after i told him we were a mistake. (i said that because he was being a complete dick head to me and very rude) That was a little past the middle of september when we broke up
When I compare my life back in September, to now, its completely different. Back then I had such a busy social schedule. I was never ever alone. If I was alone, it was like for an hour or two max per day. Literally. I had people constantly texting me to hang out. I just had a solid group
No one really contacts me to see how im doing. I mean, I have one friend that contacts me a few times a week to eat meals with her and chat. Then I have another that contacts me like every other week or so to see how im doing, but other than that no. One girl who I thought i was close with, is now mainly a professional relationship. I am president of a club, and I am essentially her boss. So when we talk, its just about the organization and responsibilites.
My roommate is not mean, its just that we never talk.
Its just so lonely and isolating here. No one on my floor talks to me because of the breakup with Steven. Steven is the most popular guy on my floor, and they all side with him. This is such a terrible thing to say, but I feel like I could drop dead in my room, and no one would notice. I mean, literally no one on my floor has talked to me since last semester except for two people saying hello.
Its not like i have a huge problem with this lifestyle. I mean, its pretty productive because I have more time to devote to my extracurriculars and my non-profit job. But still, when I see like on facebook and stuff how social everyone is compared to me, its kinda depressing. Even just hearing Steven outside my door in the hall with his friends, and all the parties they have in his room make me feel a bit excluded.
I tried making plans with a “friend” (though clearly she aint my friend) for last thursday. At that point we had seen eachother ONCE since November. And that one time was just dinner for a half hour. So I texted her about plans. She said “sure thing. dinner thursday. text me thursday girl!” then i texted her on thursday at noon about dinner. She never responded. Ive given up. I just cant extend myself to these people anymore. (its not just that. she is friendly with Steven now, and ever since that she hasnt talked to me)
I feel like Steven is the queen bee, and im the complete opposite. He is so popular and everyone adores him. Boys and girls. Yet I definitely dont get that attention…

What Are Your Thoughts On The Longevity Of Facebook?

I understand that the gist of this question has been asked before, but I am not looking for a simple answer. This is for an essay I am writing and I am very curious about what people truly think about how long Facebook will be the social network everyone is using. Social networking websites have constantly been rising and falling since the dawn of the internet, but Facebook seems to be taking on a life of it’s own. We all thought that Myspace was the be all and end all in the realm of interconnection, but then our views were shattered with the sweeping coup by Facebook. I am just looking for serious opinions on how this whole thing will pan out. Unlike other varieties of social networking, Facebook seems to be coming out with an update before it has been necessary. Facebook comes out with a new update, feature, or overall improvement faster than it’s users can comprehend. It is akin to a record holder beating his/her own previous record before anyone else has a chance to try; Facebook developers are producing new material before anyone else even has a chance to come up with the idea. It’s truly brilliant in my opinion, but in retrospect this makes me question how far this can go. The only other website that I can think of which rivals Facebook (but not actually at all) is Twitter; which basically took the “status” feature, and made it the center aspect of the website. Twitter basically fell into the niche Facebook left for it: a hub for celebrity’s updates. As of now, Facebook seems to be keeping up with technology and pop culture, but all good things must come to an end, no? And with Facebook going public this year, I am just wondering; will I be the annoying Father (or even Grandfather) trying to friend my children on Facebook, like my parents are currently doing, in 20+ years? Does Facebook have what it takes to keep up with our out-of-control/insatiable culture?
Serious responses only please.

Approaching Random People On Facebook For Small Business?

I have a e-commerce site and I would like to expand my social media campaigns.
With twitter, I find it relatively easy – it’s casual, a lot of random people talk to other random people, and each message is so transitory that I feel fine approaching people. (Not ‘selling’ per se, but saying hi or something)
With facebook, I feel like a spammer when I approach a stranger, even when he/she is obviously interested in my niche. I hate cold calling and I feel like one of those cold callers when I approach unknown people on facebook.
It’s especially hard because we’re not a big company known by everybody, and I also don’t have a huge budget with which I can run continuous facebook ads and/or ‘like us and get free stuff’ campaigns.
So my question is: how do people approach potential customers on facebook without being a spammer or spending too much money on it?
Is there a smart way to manage your facebook ad budget?
It is a very general question indeed, but any helpful comments would be appreciated.

Should I Go Back On Facebook?

My boyfriend broke up with me just over a week ago and while we were together, we both made an agreement to close our Facebook accounts. I’d really like to start getting in touch with some old friends again so I have a distraction from the pain and hurt I’m feeling and thought the best way to do this would be to get back on Facebook.
Based on the agreement I had with him, would you think I was being out of order if I got back on Facebook now or do you think I should wait a bit longer before I do? Obviously I do not intend to add anyone affiliated with my ex as a friend on Facebook and I really don’t want any agro off my ex for doing this because I’m hurting enough as it is.
I’ll be grateful for any thoughts.
Rach xx

Unemployed Web Developer Advice Required?

I’m 22, from the UK, I have nothing but high-school GCSEs (B-Cs) and some college education.I was recently made redundant from a retail job, due to the current economic state here in UK, I don’t believe I’ll be employed again any time soon.
I’m seeing being unemployed as a mixed blessing, I have little bills to pay, live at home with parent, so lots of spare time on my hand.
For the past 6-7 years I’ve been studying Web Development. I’ve become more than fluent in XHTML/CSS, javascript, PHP, Mysql relational database design, SEO, typography, regular expression, and lots of other stuff, I’m a master at none but >= fluent in them all 🙂
I’ve only ever built sites for fun or stupid things like blogs or messed about with APIs such as Facebook and Amazon, yet now I find I have an opportunity to make a hobby a job. Question is I have no experience as an entrepreneur except maybe marketing/SEO, so I do not know where to start, I have no niche site idea, haven’t got lots of cash to spend on marketing, no products… I have nothing to offer users but fancy blank pages… not exactly king content!
So where do I start? 🙂
Kind Regards
Mike
