From the article:
“Tax agency officials told lawmakers in a briefing yesterday that 471 groups received additional scrutiny, a total that indicates a crackdown on politically active nonprofit groups that extends beyond the Tea Party outfits.”
“In early 2011, the IRS denied the tax-exempt status of an affiliate of the San Francisco-based Emerge America, which trains Democratic women to run for office. The agency said it was disqualified because the group’s activities were “conducted primarily for the benefit of a political party and a private group of individuals, rather than the community as a whole.”
“An Austin, Texas-based group, Progress Texas, received a letter from the IRS in February 2013 when it sought nonprofit status. The letter came from the agency’s Laguna Niguel, California, office, which sent essentially the same queries to Republican-leaning groups.
“As with the Tea Party groups, the IRS sought copies of promotional materials, backgrounds of officers, meeting minutes and specifics about activities, such as get-out-the-vote drives, that the organization said it would conduct.”

Consider the Secret Service and Military scandal in Columbia:
In the USA, prostitution is considered illegal since it violates the dignity and quality of life of a person due to economic disparity.
Where prostitution is legal; the act is still considered unethical by our own value system–but since it is considered a legal (and the “oldest profession”), when the person is owed money they expect to be paid since this is how they earn their costs of living.
Where the Secret Service actually committed a theft, if prostitution is legal in Columbia–by our own standards the entire market is illegal since it exploits those who are less advantaged.
The question is for those who don’t find a problem with the market of prostitution–which is worse, theft or exploiting the less advantaged?

And why are conservatives silent on the issue? Justice Thomas has sat on at least 11 cases where a Harlan Crow-affiliated group filed a brief — adopting the group’s preferred outcome in all but one case. Moreover, Thomas has yet to explain the full extent of his connections to Crow, despite news reports that Crow lavished gifts and other expensive favors on Thomas and his family. Nor has Thomas explained how his gifting scandal differs from the very similar gifting scandal that brought down Justice Abe Fortas.
There is one way, however, in which this scandal is quite different from the Fortas resignation. Fortas was a liberal justice, but many of the clearest calls for his resignation came from progressives such as Sen. (and future Vice President) Walter Mondale (D-MN) and Brown v. Board of Education author Chief Justice Earl Warren. As Murphy explains, however, Thomas’ ethics scandals have been met with “deafening silence from Republicans.” Unlike Mondale and Warren, who understood that the integrity of the judiciary must trump ideology, Murphy suggests Republicans have the opposite values:
One of the most shocking speeches that a Supreme Court justice has ever made was one that Justice Thomas made just a few months ago to a group of Virginia law students, in which – with his wife in the audience – he admitted, plainly, that his cause on the Supreme Court as a justice was the exact same cause that his wife was pursuing as the chief organizer of one of the nation’s most prominent Tea Party groups.http://www.truth-out.org/rep-murphy-says…

To my understanding, Enron was a thriving company. It expanded into other industries. To sustain it’s growth , however, Enron began borrowing money and had serious debts to pay. The company decided to hide this fact because it would make the stock look less valuable. They also began offering secret information to to large potential investors which was illegal. And to top that off, the CEO of Enron began to secretly sell his stock so that he doesn’t lose any money. The truth eventually came out and the company announced a loss of $638 million and the stock market fell drastically.
Now, who is Arthur Anderson and what exactly was his role in the scandal? I heard that his job was to ensure that potential investors could rely on Enron’s financial statements.
Any information regarding this case is appreciated ! (This is for an assignment). I can’t seem to find anything about Andersen on google :/
Thanks!
