I want to open an scottrade account, though I want to know when do I pay for opening stock, and like how does it work? when I buy stock do I pay?

I have no background knowledge in finances, business, and stocks. My degree is in literature. However, I’m interested in learning about buying and selling stocks, the stock market, etc. Are there any easy to understand books or guides I can purchase for beginners? I plan to start that way and continue self-teaching. Thanks!
